Noise from Australia highlights the conflict between Aborigines and whites.
The anthology with Australian texts consists of 14 texts covering the major genres. All the texts are audio-recorded by native speakers and have got film clips, pictures, and questions that aim at activating the students. A clip from "Australia" starring Nicole Kidman is included in the anthology.
The Aborigines and the white Australians have been at odds with each other since the English colonization of Australia. This conflict forms the backdrop of several texts in the anthology e.g. in Thea Astley's gripping short story "Heart is Where the Home Is", Archie Roach's emotional song "Took the Children Away", and in Kathrine Susannah Prichard's short story "N'goola".
Violent death and assault connect to the clash of civilizations which can be seen both in Bruce Pascoe's short story "Flour for Your Grave"and in an excerpt from Doris Pilkington Garimara's novel "Follow the Rabbit Proof Fence". Henry Lawson's short story "The Drover's Wife" pays homage to the white women who wrestled with the hard life in the bush and for comparison read its modern version "The Drover's De Facto". Les A. Murray's two poems allow us to see glimpses of today's Australia.
