Noise from Australia

“Noise from Australia” highlights the conflict between the Aborigines and the whites.

The anthology with Australian texts consists of 16 texts covering the major genres. All the texts are, like all ClassBooks – anthologies, audio-recorded by native speakers and have got film clips, pictures, and questions that aim at activating the students.

The Aborigines and the white Australians have been at odds with each other since the English colonization of Australia. This conflict forms the backdrop of several texts in the anthology. Listen to Archie Roach’s heartbreaking song “Took the Children Away” with your students and they’ll never forget it. Read an excerpt from the novel “Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence” by Doris Pilkington Garimara based on her mother’s escape from a mission station back to her tribe. Let the students listen to former PM Kevin Rudd’s Apology to the Stolen Generations and discuss if a public apology can ever ease the pain that eg Archie Roach has suffered.

Henry Lawson's short story "The Drover's Wife" pays homage to the white women who wrestled with the hard life in the bush and for comparison read its modern version "The Drover's De Facto".

Familiarize the students with various English dialects. Use the sound-files as homework. Please note the low price for this anthology: 600 Euros
